OPAPA SMASH.
INQUIRY POSTPONED,
The commission appointed to inquire into the cause of the accident to the Wellington-Napier express train on September 22, after inspecting the engine at Napier, and visiting the scene of the accident, heard technical evidence at Wellington as to the condition of the track and the engine, after which an adjournment was made until such time as the engine-driver, who was then in hospital at Napier, might be able to attend sittings of the commission. The engine-driver was discharged from the hospital on Friday last, but as a charge of manslaughter arising out of the accident has since been laid against him by the police, the commission considers it advisable not to continue the inquiry until such charge has been disposed of, and with the concurrence of the Minister of Railways the commission has cancelled arrangements inade for the sitting at Napier on Tuesday next. Mr. Dennehy states, on behalf of the chairman of the commission, who is absent from Wellington, that the sittings of the commission will be resumed on termination of the proceeding relating to the charge against the engine-driver.
