ROADS AND FOOTPATHS LOAN.

The Mayor, at last nights meeting of the Borough Council, again brought up the question of raising a loan for the laying down of footpaths and tar scaling of roads within the borough. The Clerk reported that correspondence had not been very promising in endeavours to raise the money, if required, but negotiations were, still being made with this end in view.

The Mayor said that he was confident the ratepayers would sanction the proposal when put before them. Such a scheme was in their best interests. It was 13 years since a street loan proposal had been placed before them. It was universally accepted now that motor traffic was tearing up the roads to a far greater extent than the horse traffic did and people now realised that roads must be tar sealed as by doing so maintenance costs were kept down and consequently the rates would be reduced. (>. Walker said they should do all such works out of loan moneys. Rv raising loans the Council had to pay interest and sinking fund but Ihe cost to the borough would not be as great as if the work was done out of ordinary revenue. The Clerk hopes to have something definite in connection with the loan, to lay before the Councillors at the next meeting.
