AUSTRALIAN LADIES’ BAND

COMING TO FOXTON NEXT THURSDAY EVENING.

A generation or so ago the woiM was thrilled at the story of the heroism of a Highland piper-Piper Findlater, who was wounded whi taking part in a charge against the wild tribesmen on the heights o Dargai in India. But when lie recovered himself sufficiently lie sat up, tuned up his pipes, and played his fellows on to victory with t thrilling strains of the “Cock o the North.” That, and many other similar incidents, have given the bagpipes a place in the musical wor d which nearly everybody is willing to concede. The idea that the pipes are not musical is now as exploded as the superstition that the Scot has no humour. If, however, anyone should have any doubts about the subject, they ought to hear the Australian Scottish Ladies Pipe Band at the Town Hall next Thursday night, and have then: doubts dispelled for ever. There is a band of dainty lady pipers, under the command of Drum-Major Darwin, F.R.0.5., and the Pipe-Major Jessie Young, who have won honours m all the discipline competitions m Australia, where they began seven years ago. Since then they have done an immense service to phdantropic and charitable causes and have now set out on a world tour, embracing Canada, America, France, Britain and South Africa. They received most enthusiastic send-offs in ail the Australian cities, and have had the Australian verdict very heartily endorsed by all the audiences in the cities and towns of New Zealand. They are now working northwards to Auckland, where they will embark, and are presenting entirely new programmes in all the towns m which they appeared before. Apart from the novelty of having a Pipe Band composed wholly of ladies, the programme they present is most varied and interesting, and individually and collectively the artists give a performance which delights everyone. Pipe music, song, dance, and recitation give variety to a programme which for attractiveness will be very bard to beat. 1 e o plan is at Heath’s.
