KNOCKED INTO DITCH.
CAR STRUCK BY TRAIN.
DEPARTMENT PROCEEDS AGAINST DRIVER.
On the information of Mr. J. McDonald, stationmaster at Longburn, Walter Selwyn Fell, of that township, was charged at the Palmerston North Magistrate’s Court yesterday that, on August 31 being the driver of a motor car, he did attempt to pass over the Karere crossing at a time when the line was not clear, (says the Standard.)
Mr. Cooke, who appeared for the Railway Department, said that defendant’s car had been struck by the Foxton-Palmerston North train and knocked into the ditch. Nobody had been injured. The train was slowing down at the time, and the whistle had been sounded 200 yards from the crossing. Defendant, in explanation, said that he had not heard the train approaching. A fine of £2, with costs £2 15s, was imposed by the Magistrate (Mr. J, L. Stout).
