BOWLING

OPENING OF FOXTON GREEN,

Yesterday afternoon -the lojeal Bowling Club’s green, was officially opened by the President (Rey. AY. H. Walton) • Considerable disappointment was experienced through the weather being unpropitious, the pleasant conditions prevailing during the previous two days having raised high hopes of a very successful opening function. However, the most was made of the circumstances, and after the President had declared the green open for play, six rinks entered in the spirit of the game, and continued play until rain again intervened and made conditions altogether unpleasant. The President, in welcoming those present, expressed regret that more favourable weather conditions were not experienced for (he function, and said he hoped bowlers and croquet players would make the most of the circumstances. Considerable preparation had been made on the green in view of the opening of the season, and lie also wished to express appreciation of the efforts of members of the ladies’ croquet club in raising the necessary funds for the renovation of the croquet court during the off season. The ladies were to he congratulated on their energy and enterprise. The .President also referred to the feeling of good fellowship that exists among bowlers and said this was one of the characteristic features of the game. Before asking Mrs Walton to throw the first jack, the President took the opportunity of presenting to the winners of last season’s croquet competitions the various trophies. (The list of trophy winners will be found under Croquet Notes.) Mrs Walton delivered the first bowl amid applause, an play was proeeced with on both the bowling and croquet greens.
