GAS WORKS

AUGUST WORKING. ' During the month of August 369,500 ft. of gas was manufactured, which, with the amount in the holder on August Ist., 13,600 ft., made a total of 383,100 ft. Of this 309,700 ft. was used by consumers, 27,000 at the works and there was 15,200 ft. in the holder on September Ist., leaving 31,200 ft., representing 8.1 percent, unaccounted foi\ The amount of coke produced was 8 tons, 36 tons of coal being carbonised yielding 10,945 c. ft. of gas to the ton. The receipts for the month totalled £223 18s 7d and were made up as follows:—Gas sales (lighting) £49 18s Bd, heat and power £95 17s Id; coke sales £24 4s 4d; tar sales £34 ss; fittings £lB 2s 2d, miscellaneous £1 11s 4d. The expenditure for the month totalled £2lB 3s 6d and was made up as follows>Coal £99 6s 3d, salaries and wages £44 2s 3d, fittings £5 11s 6d, working expenses 10/11, repairs 7/8, tools £2 Bs, cartage and freight £6 5s 3d, interest on Sinking Fund £59 11s Bd. From B. H. Just, Palmerston N. asking permission to collect pine cones from the Rifle Range Reserve, for seed . purposes. —Permission granted subject to a royalty of 9d per sack being paid. From Anderson’s Ltd., Christchurch, enclosing circular re road graders.—Received.

From the Foxton Chamber of Commerce stating that at a meeting of the Chainber the question of hawkers came up for discussion, it being decided to request the Council to keep a stricter supervision over persons applying for hawker’s licenses and that of such persons be found to he undesirable no license be granted.—The matter to receive attention.

From the Municipal Association of New Zealand notifying the Council that the next conference will be held in Dunedin on 4th February.—Held over. GAS MANAGER’S REPORT. The gas manager reported as follows : The apparatus at the works is in good working condition. During the month I have supplied and fixed two new cookers and one califont. I have also extended the gas main in Whyte St. to supply the house of Mr. A. Thomas. All repairs necessary lo consumers’ pipes and services have been atended to. —Adopted.
