MANAWATU COUNTY

MEETING OP COUNCIL.

The Manawatu County Council met at Sanson on Tuesday, Sir James Wilson presiding. There were also present Councillors Penney. Fagan, Boyce, Barber, MeKelvie and Hunt.

HIGHWAYS’ MAINTENANCE. The Public Works Department wrote forwarding copies of the current year’s estimates for No. !) Highways’ district. Those for the County were as follow:—-Mainten-ance Sanson-Awalniri road £317 at £1 for £2; Awahuri-Palmerston N. £258 al £1 for £2; TlimatangiKnngiotu section £235 at £1 for £2; Rangiotn-North Boundary Kairnnga County £4(55 at £1 for £2: County Boundary on Whaka-rongo-Ashinirst road £217 at £1 for £2; Awalmri-Feilding £.127 at £1 for £2; Ashhurst-County Boundary £lfi3 at £1 for £2; County bound-arv-Pohaiigina County £27 at £1 for £2; construction: Rangitikei Line £1 al £1 for £1; Whiskey Creek bridge £2OO at £1 for £l. Received

The District Highways Council wrote intimating that it had not had any communication' from the Horowliemta County relative to the Manawatu river bridge on the Shannon- Foxton highway.—Received. GENERAL BUSINESS. In collection with a notice from tho Main Highways Board, it was resolved to give public notice that roads throughout the County will be classified in accordance with the regulations.

The Public Works Department wrote advising that for the purposes of the motor regulations, a tractor with one hauler attached would be deemed to form one lorry and each additional traitor would be deemed to be a separate motor lorry. Each trailer after the first paid the full fee. —Received. The New Zealand Railways wrote advising that it had a “Z” engine and a four wheel van available for sale. The tramway manager reported that he was of opinion that a class “Z” engine would he too heavy for the requirements of the County and that the cost of bringing the van to Sanson would he prohibitive. It was resolved to make further inquiries.

The Foxton Borough Council wrote intimating that in view of the County’s unwillingness to contribute more than one-third of the cost of the proposed work in Purcell street, it had been deferred indefinitely. Mr. ,). Ross, who owned the section at the corner of Patrick ami Purcell Streets, had made an offer of a piece of land sufficient lo allow of a gradual turning into Purcell street. The corner was a dangerous one, while a power pole stood too far out. The County engineer stated that the position was aggravated by the faulty construction of the road, for it ran too close lo the south fence. The road itself was full width. —It was decided to have a plan of the locality, prepared in order that the Council could consider the matter further. The Manawatu Rabbit Board wrote directing attention of the Council to the rabbit pest on land belonging to the County situated at Himatangi.—it was decided to take steps to have the property fumigated.

TKAMA\jAY MANAGER'S REPORT The Tramway Manager reported as follows: —The chief items of Iratlie were: Minerals and manures 134 tons, merchandise 68 tons, timber 21,820 sup. feet, and metal 780 cubic yards. The accounts showed ilcliit of £177 0s Sd for the month's working, the expenditure including several extra items. Good progress had been made with the rebuilding of the two extra trucks, one is just being completed and the other one is well under way.-—Re-ceived. ENGINEER'S REPORT. The County engineer reported as follow: — Kawa lvawu Riding.—4’he surfacemen had been employed in the usual road maintenance work and the trimming of the newly-metalled portion of Saunder road. With re-

ferenee to acquiring about an half acre of land to straighten a sharp corner on the Taikorea road the property owner was prepared to sell the land required for the sum of £l4 per acre. Mr. Cornfoot had approached me several times with reference to cleaning out a drain along the Taikorea road. Decided that the Council could not accept responsibility for cleaning out drains unless the roads were affected.

A wall on Riding. —Most of the Whirokino road had been under water several days during the past month, and icpair works had been retarded to a large extent. A portion only could lie trimmed up with (lie grader. The No. 2 tractor and tion might he graded when the water recedes. A portion of the Shannon road had been trimmed up with theg ruder. The No. 2 tractor and trailers were operating on the Himatangi-Kangiotu road and when repairs were well in hand on this road they would he commissioned to put the Shannon road in order. At a special meeting held in the County office on September 25, the question of heavy traffic destroying the Foxton-Shannon road and also (lie working of the Shannon punt over the Manawatu river was discussed with Mr. Hannah, district engineer. It was decided to bring these matters up for discussion at the next district council meeting which was to he held shortly.

The engineer also reported on the stone crusher, and it was decided that the matter of providing a telephone to the plant be further considered.
