BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING.

The lisual monthly meeting of the Foxton Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last night, presided over by His Worship the Mayor (M. E. Perreau Esq.) Also present were: —Councillors Parkin, F. Woods, S. E. Cmvley, T. W. Winstanley, C. Rand, R. J. Thompson, McMurray. 'An apology for absence was received from Cr. Adams. CORRESPONDENCE was read and dealt with as follows. From Beautifying Society appealing to the Council for the sum of £45 towards caretaker’s salary. —Granted. From Ellis & Co., Lid., submitting their estimated cost of laying down local streets in “Union” asphalt under the penetration method. —Received. From Foxton Racing Club, bringing under the notice of the Council the advisability of providing swimming baths in the near future, title committee thinking the time opportune in view of the recent sad fatality at the Beach. — Held over.

From a household re laying of a road in Reeve St., and stating that it is impossible to get out at night after rain without going over one’s boot tops in mud and water. —Road to be attended to when a grader is procured.

From the Manawatu County Council re cost of work in Purcell St., and stating that that Council cannot see it way to contribute more than one third. Re metal the Council is prepared to supply requirements as soon as available. —Received.

From Restar Ltd., advising that they have arranged with the Dannevirke Gas Works to forward the Council another truck of tar. — Received.

From the Beautifying Society stating that at a meeting of that body recently the following motion was carried:—“That the Foxton Borough Council be written to asking if they would move the gun now plalced in the Triangle to either Victoria or Easton Park.” —Decided to leave the gun in the Triangle. From same, asking if the Council would be prepared to move the posts that are in front of the P.O. used for tying up of horses as the Society thinks they are out of date. —Request declined. From United Sports Association slating that at a meeting of that bodv held recently the following

motion was carried: “That n, loiter he written to the Foxton Borough Council urging the desirability of establishing swimming baths in Foxton." —Held over

Decided to grant Air. Woodroofe a building permit to erect a lean-to at (be rear of bis dwelling in Avenue' ltd., as per plan supplied.

Resolved that an extra street lamp lie erected on the near th« Harbour Board shed. The Borough roadman was granted an increase of five shillings per week in his salary. WORKS COMMITTEE REPORT. The Wjorks Committee reported that during the month an inspection was made of the boundary road at the north end of Russell St., and it was agreed to fill in the drain on the east side of the road, till up the hollow by the railway liue and at the turn in Russell St., and request the Railway Department, to move the “stop" notice board one (bain northwards. An inspection was also made of the turning into Purcell St., from Johnston St., and it was agreed that the sandhill on the east side of Johnston St. he cut back, the Purcell St. culvert, be widened bv 34 feet, also to request the Power Board and P. & T. Department to shift the poles to make way for the widening. The turning from Purcell St. was inspected and it was agreed to widen the roadway at this point to 48 feet from the pole at the corner, and to till up the dip, thus straightening the metalled portion ot Purcell St.,

Decided that the report of the Public Works Committee be adopled with the exception of portion dealing with Purcell St. work which work lie held over in the meantime and that the Comity Council he advised accordingly, mention being made of Mr ,J. Boss’s oiler of land to widen the corner.

WATER AND DRAINAGE. “During the month the water and drainage stall have laid sewers in Robinson Street north and Park street sowers. All the new sewers have been cleaned out and are now ready for use. A pipe has been laid from the bottom tank of the tower so that it can be emptied without interfering witli the top tank. The overflow pipe from the tower has also been extended further out to the river and all the maintenance work has been attended to. Adopted.

PUMPING STATION. During the month 830,000 gallons of water was pumped. The maximum current used was 32 amperes. —Adopted. ROAD FOREMAN'S' REPORT. During the month of August the following works were carried out by the road stall: — Carting and spreading metal Robinson, Duncan, Union, Park and W'lliyte streets also Moutoa and Avenue roads and Lady’s Grading footpaths, Cook streets. Filling in drains Saudon Road with sand from Russell St., carting tar to yard and general maintenance The low places on the north of Sandon Road have also been tilled

and these will he metalled over as soon as the material arrives. A further supply of clay is expected shortly and this will be spread now metal has been put on. The remainder of the GOO ton order of Belmont metal has come to hand, also the additional 200 tons. This has all been spr’ead on the road indicated with the exception of about 30 tons now in the yard. The new railway rate is adding very considerably to the cost of; our metal from Belmont (this fact makes it almost imperative that we should have the use of a road grader). We have now 140 barrels of tar in hand for asphalting and tar sealing. The weather however is not at present suitable for commencing this work. The report was adopted and Cr. McMurray authorised to make enquiries re grader in Levin.
