SHOT BY HIS FRIEND
KIP BE THOUGHT TO BE UNLOADED. Christchurch, September 14. Andrew Giffney, 27 years of age, was accidently shot dead yesterday morning at his home, New Brighton, while examining a Winchester repeating rillc in company with Bernard Deidrich. Deidrich says that lie tired the gun, believing that it was unloaded, and was explaining the mechanism. An inquest was held to-day. The Coroner (Mr. 11. Y. Widdowson) said that the occurrence was one of those particularly sad ones wherein people examined rifles without first ascertaining whether they were loaded, lie wondered that people did not first see that weapons they examined were unloaded. It was to be hoped that this would be a warning to people to be more careful. There was no doubt that the whole tiling was an accident, and he sympathised with Deidrich in the loss of his friend, lie returned a formal verdict of accidental death.
