NEW BRITISH BATTLE-SHIP.

PROBABLY THE LAST TO BE BUILT.

London, September 3,

The battleship Nelson was sueeessi’ully launched at Newcastle-on-Tyne.

The whole design of the ship is the result of the experience gained in the war, particularly at Jutland. At the same time, it conforms to the Washington Treaty displacement limit of 35,000 tons, with guns of a calibre not exceeding 10-inch. The tonnage of the Royal Sovereign class is 25,750 tons, and the Hood is 41,200 tons. The Nelson is therefore midway between these two. It is considered likely that the Nelson and her sister-ship Rodney will be the last battleships built. The capital ships of the future will very likely have the elements of the present-day cruisers, the tonnage of which is restricted to 10,000 tons, with guns of a maximum calibre of 8 inches. No other battleship may now be laid down by Britain, Japan, and America, until 1931. The Nelson cost £7,000,000, and it will cost £400,000 a year to maintain her.
