NASH “KNOCK-OUT” CUP
The first game in the Nasli “Knock-out” Competition was played at the racecourse, Foxton, on Saturday; and as there has always been keen rivalry between the two teams, it was anticipated there would be a good game between Hui Mai and Foxton. Foxton fieked off against a slight, baffling wind and Hui Mai’s (greens) heavy forwards soon got to work, and rushed the ball right down to Foxton’s (yellow) line. Tana nearly got over, but was downed a. few feet from the line; from the resulting scrum the yellow forwards cleared well. From a good passing rush D’Ath looked dangerous, but Proctor stopped progress and found the line well past the twentyfive. The greens kept up the pressure until Hughes got away with a dribbling rush, and being well supported by Burr, Royal and O’Reilly, they took the ball nearly the whole length of the field. From a serum Hirini got possession, and started a pretty bout, the ball going through the hands of Duffin, Fuller, Reid, to Proctor, the last-nam-ed streaked over the line,'but D’Ath knocked the ball out of his hands and both fell on the ball together. From the scrum five yards jont, George was penalised for off-side, but from a difficult angle Taylor was unable to goal. From the kick-out, Duffin secured and made a lot of ground,' but his pass was intercepted l>y Parnta, who kicked. Taylor getting possession, heat those following up and runnig to centre, passed to Reid, who improved the opening and handed on to Proctor, who scored near the corner. Taylor made a great effort, hid the wind beat him.—Foxton 3, Hui Mai nil. The greens livened up and a passing rush by George, Enokn and Bryant and the latter looked dangerous; hut his pass was well forward, and I lie opportunity was lost. Royal and McDonald then put in some good work, but off-side play by an overanxious yellow, gave Tana a shot from bn if-way, but a good kick just fell short. The game now was very fast, both sides throwing the hall about in approved style. T. Fuller seen ml, transferred to Duffin, who dummied three men, then to Reid and A. Fuller got within five yards of the line. The green forwards go( a move on. Parata then to D’Ath, but Taylor made no mistake and saved brilliantly. Pla> then swung across the field and p, ivanl got clean a-vay, but Tttvlot' again had too much pace, and brought him to 'earth. Over-eager-ness to clear by L e yellows when off-side and Gardiner bad a shot without result. The greens were still pressing when Wallace tried to pot; Reid blocked same, and Duffin like a steak was off closely followed by Burr, who received and on reaching the full-back passed to T. Fuller. The pass was rather low, and Fuller slipped over when endeavouring to take it, thus a certain score was spoilt. Back came the greens again, but from the loose Burr took the ball at toe rightthrough the opposition to the fullback, jwho kicked into touch. ' Proctor got possession, dummied nicely and having the opportunity endeavoured to pot, but the wind spoilt the shot. The Hui Mai forwards then carried aii before them, going nearly the fpll length of the field. Gardiner had bad luck crossing from a pass forward passed the ball from the ground and was penalised and Nees easily goaled Hui Alai 3.'Foxton 3.
The greens returned to the attack per medium of Tana, Gardiner and Robinson from a line-out McDonald got well away, hut support failing at critical moment, Parata was able to stop his career. Then the prettiest play of the day took place. Duilin snapepd up, swerved and dummied through for about dll yards, handed to A. Duller, then Keid and lastly Proctor, this man being downed by, Wallace within inches of the line. George kickthe ball away. Taylor made a good run; and transferred to A. Puller: the latter made a splendid opening, but spoilt it by passing too low to his brother, who was in support, and \Vail ace secured and found the line well uo held.
iPor a Lime after the commencement of the second spell, play livened about nud-held. field got in some good work and Wallace had to kick across the held into touch to save; from the line-out DLirini secured the bah and passed to fieid, to Duliin to Proctor —the latter was pushed out near the corner. The greens then took" a turn at attacking, and Taylor was called on several times, but was never found wantmg. Prom a line-out, McDonald, Durr and fioyal got away and took play to Wallace at full-back, who again had to iind the line in his own twenty-five. Prom the line-out, the Poxton forwards started goalwards aud Durr got over, but was called back for a knock-on. A concerted attack by Gardiner, Parata and D’Ath was nicely stopped by T. Puller and lana getting oil-side. Taylor returned play to the greens’ twentylive. George and Me two Paratas were getting moving nicely when I intrin intervened and McDonald and Durr joining m, the greens put on the defensive again.
