BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY.
MONTHLY MEETING
The usual monthly meeting of The Foxton Beautifying Society was held in the Presbyterian Sunday schoolroom on Thursday night, presided over by the President (M. E. Perreau, Esq.). Also present were Messrs. D. Christie, Winstanley, E. Admore, Revs. Peryman and M’alion and Mesdames Perreau, Moore, Delanv, and Me Murray. CORRESPONDENCE was read 1 and dealt with as follows : From the Foxton Borough Council, offering to co-operate with the Society in the laying out of Easton Park in acoerdnnce with the original scheme drawn up by Mr. R. S. Black, of Palmerston Nbrtli. The President reported that the Council already had six men working on the Park, cleaning it up and mending fences, etc. It was the intention of the Council to turn the existing football ground round to face north and south, and this would make a lot more space available in the Park. The letter was received. From Constable Owen in reply to a letter from the Society asking if lie would agree to the planting of climbing roses along the Courthouse fence, stating that he considered it very nnadvisable to plant roses there as they would be a menace to pedestrians.—Received.
GENERAL. It was decided to call fresh tenders for the laying down of a strip of concrete bounding the Courthouse section ns it was considered that two inches of concrete was not sufficient. Fresh tenders are to be called for a strip three inches thick. It was resolved to transfer a further sum of £SO from the Post Office account to the Society’s banking account. Mr. D. Christie, while complimenting the Society on the very pleasing results of the work done, especially at the Northern end of the town, said lie wished to enter a protest against the Council’s action in placing a German gun (war trophy) in the triangle facing the. main street. He proposed that the Borought Council be written to asking that it be removed and placed either in Victoria or Easton Park. Rev. Peryman and Mr. Win Stanley also spoke in support of the motion, which was carried. If was resolved to ask the Council for a donation of £45 towards maintenance fund. Decided to ask Council to have the hitching posts in front of the Post: Office removed, as the Society considers they are out of date and an eye-sore to the town. BIG EFFORT MOOTED.
The president pointed out that it would be necessary in the near future to devise some means of augmenting the society’s funds.
After considerable discussion, it was finally agreed that this Society convene a public meeting to consider the advisability of making a hugli effort to raise a, sum of money for the following purposes, namely: beautification of Easton Park; childrens’ playground scheme; local ambulance; swimming baths; and that all local sports bodies lie specially invited to lie present. Meeting to be held in supper-room, September Bth, 11)25. Rev. M r alton, in proposing that a motor ambulance be included, spoke strongly on the unnecessary suffering and inconvenience caused by having to lake serious cases to the hospital in private cars or in the out-of-date ambulance from the Palmerston North Hospital. Several of those present spoke of experiences with the ambulance and also private cars, all agreeing that something should he done to improve matters.
