The matter was reported to the police and resulted in the arrest of a Maori boy named Norman Parewliiti who will be charged at the Palmerston North Court with the offence.
A fire at Ronpotea on Tuesday morning destroyed the pa rape, and residential premises of X. I. \Y. Brown, Ltd, Apart from the plant and general workshop material destroyed, four motor lorries, two motor cars, a charabanc and several motor cycles were burned. The Post 'Office nearby bad a. narrow escape, being saved by a bucket brigade. A painful accident befell Mr -I. Gngliardi, of the Public Works Department staff, Manga ore,con Sunda v morning. A well-known Haw era resident, Fred Stevens, a passenger by the mail train on Tuesday night was killed by falling off the train shortly after leaving Patou. Dec-eased was noticed on the carriage platform, where lie gave the guard money for his ticket. The latter, returning later with the change, missed Stevens. An alarm was given and the body was found on a curve of the line. Deceased had been a resident of Hawern for If) years and was highly popular. He was organiser for the Liberal League in this electorate.
Farmers who are farming hill country will be looking forward with interest to the results of experiments bein-r enrried out by the Department of Agriculture in lopdressing of hill pastures. It must be realised that to obtain anything like definite information, the results of the manuring should be observed over several years, but results on a Waikanae farm, where the superphosphate was broadcasted hist year, are very promising for so short a period. Definite figures are nof available, but it is known that the owner lias been able to winter 2i sheep per acre, whereas previously he had only been able to carry two. The extra half-sheep per acre lias practically covered the expenses of top-dressing, and he will have the increased production of the next, two or three years as profit.
A Ilorowhnua Rugby referee, Air G. X. Emmett, put up something of a record during the week-end in that to reach Levin from Foxton — a distance of twelve miles—he was compelled to travel over 248 miles of road (says the Chronicle).
