CHIEF POST OFFICE.
PALMERSTON NORTH'S NEW STATUS. Yesterday Palmerston North was constitntoil a chief post office. The new postal district will cover a very large territory, extending I'iotn Fox ton on the West Coast to A kit io on the East, and approximately 1(10 offices will come under the jurisdiction of Palmerston North. In the south the district will include Manakau, while the northern limits will he Balls and Creation!, while Dannevirke and I’ahiatna are also included. The new arrangement will entail an increase of about ten in the staff of the Palmerston North office, but, apart from the increased prestige, Palmerston North will not he benefited to any appreciable extent. However, the effect of the constitution of the new chief postal district will he fell in the outlying offices, where matters will he greatly facilitated for savings hank depositors. Dannevirke, which has been in the Napier district, will become a ledger office, and persons desiring to make with-drawals will he able to obtain the amount the same day. Eeilding at present enjoys this privilege. Considerable speeding' up in (his class of business will result in the small offices. Taking Eoxlon as an instance, ii may lie mentioned that previously withdrawal slips have had to go to Wellington, while with the new order of things the slips will go to Palmerston North and the warrants will he consequently returned more expeditiousy.
