GOLDEN WEDDING.

MeCAKTY—ATKJXS

Yesterday marked the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the wedding of Mr and .Mrs McCarty, former well-known residents of Palmerston North, hut now residing at Plimmerton (says tin* Standard). 'Pile wedding was celebrated at Marlon on June 2-1, 1875, the contracting parties being George, eldest son of Mr and .Mrs Hugh .McCarty, Pa tea, and Selina, second daughter of Mr and Mrs W. Atkins, Foxlon. Mr .McCarty. who was born in Melbourne, came to New Zealand in the company of iiis parents when hut. a boy of 10 years of age, and lias been a resident in the Dominion l'or some (if years. Airs .McCarty is a native of New Zealand, having been born at Orariu Valley, Wellington.

Mr McCarty was closely associated with tiie early days of the Afanawat.it, and brought through from Pox Lon the lirsl horse tram, while he later conveyed the lirsl batch of emigrants from Foxlon to llalcombe. When unite a lad he assisted an uncle who was engaged in contracting for the troops throughout Taranaki during the Maori Wars and frequently came in close contact with the Hostile natives, while Airs McCarty, as a girl, had personal experience of tlies marratiding .Maoris. At the cessation of hostilities, M.r Ale Carly returned to Palmerston North, and following till! removal of the railway station from the centre of the square, carried out the work of ploughing and levelling that section of the reserve, lie continued his occupation of contractor until some 10 years ago, when on his retiring lie went to Plimmerton to live.

In his younger days, Air McCarty was a great sportsman, being the owner of a number of racehorses, two members of his string, which will no doubt be remembered by old residents, being Tiritea, a successful steeplechase horse and winner of the big race at Auckland in one year, and Ouai, a hurdler which was afterwards sent to England.

Air and Airs Ale Carly and the* members of the family have assembled at the residence of Mrs Grammar, a sister of Mrs McCarty, at Ashliurst, in celebration of the event, but unfortunately Airs Mc(jart.y is indisposed and is confined to her bed.
