FOXTON HARBOUR BOARD

MONTHLY AIEETIN GThe regular monthly meeting of the Foxton Harbour Board was held in Palmerston on Saturday, Air J. Linklater, ALP., presiding. Also present were:—-Messrs. J. A. Nash, ALP., E. R. B. Holben, T. J. Clapham, R, AlcMurray, Al. Mortensen and W. E. Barber. CORRESPONDENCE. The Ilorowhenua County Council wrote in reference to the use of the port of Foxton in connection with the transport of bitumen, and stating in reply that the matter had been referred by the Council to the engineer for consideration. The Marine Department wrote, endorsing the appointment by the Levin Borough Council of Air. AL Mortensen as representative of the Levin Borough on the Board. The Lands Officer of the New Zealand Government Railways wrote, stating that the deeds in connection with the Board's grant of right to lay a pipe under the inilway at Foxton had been prepared, and upon completion a copy of the deed would be forwarded. A letter was received from AH. R. N. Speirs, timber merchant, stating that the Board was charging 1/5 a ton more for cement than did the Railway Department, and it was just this 1/5 that would prevent the writer from getting more cement through the port of Foxton. —Mr. AlcMurray gave notice of motion to move that consignees bead vised that the wharfage charges were under revision.

The Uoxton Borough Council wrote suggesting that, the Board arrange a deputation to the Bail way Board with a proposal that the Department should call tenders for the delivery of railway coal through the local port. In the opinion of the Borough Council, it would be cheaper to deliver the coal from Westport to Uoxton, and then by railway to Palmerston North, and other coali,i,r points on the railway than to deliver it to Wellington and send it up to Palmerston North by rail, as the distance was much less by delivery via the local port, “ft's a jolly good point," said Mr Holben. “It is now only a matter of taking the matter up with the Department and seeing if it could be done." He said that the Department had had some commitments, but these would soon expire. It was decided to communicate with the Minister .of Railways in regard to the matter. It was left in the hands of Mr. Me Murray to ascertain whether the sand could bepreveuted from blowing into the river.
