SURF BOAT SWAMPED.
ONE OF THE CREW DROWNED. Napier, June 11. A surf boat belonging to Messrs. Richardson and Co.’s steamer Pakura was swamped at Akitio yesterday. Another boat from the steamer rescued three of the crew, the fourth being drowned. He was John Carney, married, with two children, of Wellington. The accident occurred a mile from the ship, and 11 miles from shore. The second mate (Air. Henderson), who was in charge of the swamped boat, made heroic efforts to save Carney, extending over 20 minutes. Three times deceased was secured, but each time was washed from his rescuer’s grasp, the man practically being drowned in Henderson’s arms. The latter was all in when the rescue boat arrived, hut Carney’s body had then sunk, and has not been recovered.
