UNSUITABLE MAILS.
SHANNON’S COMPLAINT.
The very unsatisfactory state of the mail services between Wellington and Palmerston North (particulary as they affect the intermediate towns) as a result of the altered railway time-table were discussed at the annual meeting of the Shannon Chamber of Commerce.
A ■ copy of a letter which had been forwarded to the PostmasterGeneral by Mr. C. H. Speirs, was read in which the writer complained of the Department’s action in carrying the evening mail (per Field’s) through to Palmerston North and returning it next morning to Shannon, thus causing unnecessary delay on perhaps important correspondence which in his ease had to be dealt with immediately and thus forcing the delay of an urgent reply. In addition to this the mails for the North, especially Palmerston North, have been jeopardised. At the present time there is no mail north from Shannon between the hours of 2.30 p.m. and 11 a.in. next day. Messrs. Murray, Hyde, Gunning and Thwaites also contended that •in this respect Shannon was losing instead of gaining ground. It was decided to write the member for the district (Mr. Linklater, M.P.) and the Shannon Borough Council asking for their support in this matter and that a strong letter be forwarded to the PostmasterGeneral asking that both these mails be restored immediately, also that additional staff be provided at the Shannon post office to meet the requirements of the town.
It was further demanded that the Field’s express should be speededup to the original time-table, reaching Shannon at 8.10 p.m..
