A similar motion was also passed to Mr D. Whibley and family. It was also decided that this Council, on behalf of the citizens of Fox to n, desires to place on record the sincere appreciation of the notable work performed by the late Mr Massey during his long term of office as Prime Minister, and that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs Massey and Sir Francis Bell. In cleaning Spring Street drain it was found that the culvert crossing Norbiton Road was silted up with over a foot of sand which had been brought down from the banks further up. This has been cleared, and the drain on both sides brought down to the old level. The cleaning of drains is being proceeded with, and as metal comes to hand it will be used in repairing roads, especially Union Street, Mouloa and Avenue Roads.—Adopted. POUXDKEEPER’S REPORT.
“During the month eleven head of stock was impounded, and driving fees amounting to 4s collected. Several complaints haj/e been received about stock wandering about the roads. As the poundkeeper has not been able to give this much attention, his time being taken up with drainage work, it is recommended that Mr Sorbie he appointed assistant ranger, while Mr Neville is on drainage work, and that, he receives driving fees for the stock he impounds.”—Adopted. WATER AND DRAINAGE REPORT. “During the month the following work has been carried out by the water and drainage staff: Connecting up three householders with the high-pressure water supply, and attending to all maintenance work. A start was made during the month with the Union Street sewer, but was bung up for ten days through not being able to obtain suitable men for this work, but since then'l have been able to get ten good men, and 1 think I will he able to get another six or eight in a day or two, and therefore hope to be able to make good progress during the coming month.” PUMPING STATION REPORT. The Gas Manager reported as follows: — “The apparatus at the works is satisfactory, and in a fair state of repair. Mr Carey, the stoker, has now tendered his resignation. Owing to his absence 1 have employed AD McLean to do the stoking, and he has done the work exceptionally well, and proved himself quite satisfactory to myself, and 1 would respectfully suggest he be taken on permanently. During the monLh one new cooker has been installed, repair work done and pipes cleaned for consumers. Owing to the reduction in the price of gas, it will necessitate altering the prepay meters, giving 15 eu. ft. of gas extra for one shilling. This shall be done when the necessary change wheels come to hand. On May 4th I was given the key to the electric sub-station here, and am now in charge of the low tension lines in Foxton, and at the Beach.” —Adopted with the exception of that portion dealing with the appoinemenl of a stoker, if being decided to call applications for same. CORRESPONDENCE was read and dealt with as follows: From Mr H. Carey, tendering his resignation as gasworks stoker. Received. From Secretary Levin-Foxton-Marton Railway League, stating that at a general meeting of the League Councillor W. Adams was elected as representative of the Council. —Received. From Secretary Levin-Foxton-Martou Railway League: “it is desired by the League that your Council fully consider the notice of motion submitted to the recent general meeting of the League, the question at issue involving an important matter of policy regarding which an expression of opinion on your part would be valued as a guide not only' to your relegates, but the League as a whole. Due notice will be given as to the date of our next meeting, but in view of Constituent bodies meeting at varying intervals throughout the month,
early consideration of the notice of motion is advisable, hence this advice. The notice of motion is as follows: “That this League is deeply disappointed to learn that it is the intention of the Government to waste a large sum of money at Palmuston North, in constructing a deviation line of railway. Also the League considers that the British Railway Commissioners did not have sufficient time at their disposal to examine the merits of the proposed Levin-Foxton-Alarton link line, and respectfully requests that this proposition he analysed by the Public Works Department and Railway Board, as simplifying the speeding up process of travelling by living of 10 miles and examined also from an economic point of view. Further, this League regrets that it does not possess any direct representation in Parliament from the Mannwatu District to oppose the contemplated waste of money at' Palmerston North, and is impressed with the necessity of finding another candidate who, if successful, will in Parliament lake a statesmanlike view of this matter as being of material importance, i hereby endeavouring to secure justice to the people.”
“Since the notice-of-motion came before the League, Air J. Linklater, M.P., lias advised in response to our representations, that the Railway Board has considered the Le- , in- Foxton-Marton link proposal from every angle, and arrived al the conclusion that the time is not opportune to proceed with the work. This information does not, of course, render unnecessary some form of political action to pursue the objectives of the League quite consistent too with avoiding an ultra-partisan attitude.”
Decided that this Council quite supports the Levin-Marton Railway League's effort to have the Levin-Marton proposal submitted lo the Railway Board, and the Public Works Department to be examined both from a practical and ; iiso from an economic, point of view. Commit tees as set up at last meeting and previously"- published were confirmed.
