The monthly meeting of the Man-awatu-Oroua River Board was held on Thursday, when Mr. W. S. Carter occupied the chair. Other members present were: —Messrs. IT. Akers, A Seifert, G. B. Gower, N. P. Nielsen and H. Wilton. The engineers of the Makerua Drainage Board wrote stating that thd drainage works in tho Makerua swamp would be completed in about five or six months and then the two dredges, after finishing the work, would be offered for sale. The writers asked whether there was any work the Board thought would be suitable for the dredges. The matter was referred to the engineer. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The engineer, Mr. F. C. Hay, reported that with regard to the suggested alteration in alignment of the. Moutoa spillways, the leaving of the sandhills and building, the levees in the swamp will increase the yardage by 2fi0,000 cubic yards. The Government drain would be blocked and that, the cutting of a new drain for three miles would almost. certainly be required. A large quantity of sandhill would have, to be removed so as not to block the fioodwaters and the additional cost would lie £25,000. The suggested new route, however, included 300 acres less land out the southern portions of sections 425 to 433. The actual area of these, sections, including the spillwav. was 118 acres as compared with 454 acres by the route receommended. As regards the deviation at Westmere and Rnngitane the engineer could not recommend any alteration.
The modified scheme was discussed at length and it was decided to hold a special meeting for making the filial arrangements. Accounts amounting to £l4O 14/were passed for payment.
