MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.
Tin' Manawatu County Council met ai Sanson on Tuesday, when there were present:—Sir Janies Wilson (chairman) and Councillors Penny, Barber, Kagan, Me Re lne, Boyce and Hunt. The fact was unfilled ihai certain roads in the country were losing their identity as such, owing to the growth of gorse, and the Council resolved to serve notice on property-owners that they must cut back gorse, blackberry and lupins. Correspondence was received from the Public Trustee, staling that lie was prepared to entertain an application for a loan of £SOO for go years n t (> per ••cut. with provision for a sinking fund of ‘JO per cent. This money is for the purpose of paving the County's share of the cost of the South street bridge. Sir James Wilson reported that, in view of the fact that the bridge was now pari of a main highway, the Council would probably only have to find £250. —It was decided to hold over the mailer in the meantime.
From the Kairanga County Council suggesting the holding of a conference of the County Councils in the No. 0 Highways district at Palmerston North on June 4, with a view to the formation of a District Counties’ Association and the consideration of matters relative to tinaiieing the Highway Board’s scheme. —Agreed to, and the chairman and Cr. Fagan and the Conntv Clerk were appointed to represent the Council. From the Foxton Chamber ot Commerce thanking the eouneil for altering the departing time of the tram from Foxton, thus affording visitors a further half hour in the town. —Received. From the Manawatu Rabbit Board, staling that the Slock Depart meat had been mi nested immediately to enforce the provisions of the Xoxiou- Weeds Act in reference to the Council’s request for the destruction of gorse on the highways in the County. The Board recommended that the council should proclaim lupins a noxious weed in order to assist the Board in its work of rabbit destruction.Received.

From the Shannon Co-op Dairy Coy., Bid., requesting the Counci! to metal that portion of' the rood on No. (i Line to the Foxton cream cry. —Left in the hands of Cr. Bar her and the engineer.

The road drag operating on the Rangiot u-Himat nngi-T'oxt on main highway had done lirst-class work, and the surface of the road was improved in a marked degree. Stone - (.'rusher. —Improvements were now completed at the stonecrushing works us recommended hy the ('iium-il, and the crushing works were now operating under the new contract, system, and accordingly the working staff had been reduced. It would he advisable for the Council to appoint, an engine-driver to lake charge of the crushing works. The report was adopted and it was resolved to call for applicatioiis for an engine-driver for tlie crushing plant.

The tramway manager reported as follow: —The revenue was not up to (lie average, with a result that a debit of £24 3s Od, was shown. Owing to the efforts of the staff in transhipping goods at Himalangi, into the rollin- stock wher-
ever possible and also promptly unloading and returning of waggons to liinmtangi, the charges, failure of wagons and sheets had been very considerably reduced. As the dairy companies of the district served by the tramway would, at no distant future, be considering the question of carriage of their outputs, the manager recommended that a committee be set up to consider the best- steps to take to secure the carriage of this produce again aud to confer with the various companies and the Railway Department. In adopting the report, it was re-
solved to arrange for a joint conference of councillors and the companies on the lines suggested.
GENERAL,
The traffic inspector reported that a total of (171 drivers’ licenses had been issued to date, and fees amounting to £1 (17 15s had been collected. Dog registration fees amounting to £f>l had been collected, and a sum of £1 had been received for hawkers license fee. The following alterations to the rate roll were approved of: —B. Dooley.
