HOCKEY SEASON OPENS.
SEVEN-A-SIDE AT PALMERSTON NORTH.
The official opening of the hockey season took place yesterday afternoon at the Recreation Grounds, when the Manawatn Hockey Association held its annual sevon-a-side tournament. The competition attracted a large number of entries, there being eleven teams contesting for the Goss Cup. The teams were: Ohakea, Hinekoa (Feilding), Rongotea, Carnarvon. Olaki, Foxton (2), Vest End Old Girls’, Technical Old Girls’, High School Old Girls’ (2). The standard of play was very high, mainly owing to the fact that the ladies had been undergoing practice and training for the past few weeks in anticipation of the tournament. In practically half of the games the winners gained by means of hits behind, as when time was called there was no score on either side. The Rongotea teams were very unfortunate in that they lost both their games by hits behind. THE FINAL. After playing four rounds and a semi-final, the two teams left were Hinekoa and 11.5.0. G.
