Manawatu Herald TUESDAY, APRIL 28th, 1924. TO-MORROW'S ELECTIONS.
TO-ArORROW ihe serious duty w devolve upon adult, residents
fleeting for n term a Mayor ami nine Councillors for the Borough of Eoxton. In some instances thiimportanl privilege is but light h valued, little importance being attached to the election of' members ol the local governing body, and save for curiosity as to the resultant evidence of the personal standing of candidate.- as rellected in the Returning Officer's figures, little interesl is displayed. To the thinking person, however, the election of those men who are to guide the destinies of the borough is a matter of prime importance, and one that afreets their community and private interests; the one beeanse the Council's administration means Unwise or unwise oversight of (lie people's affairs and requirements as a community, the other because the question of economy and foresight reflects itself in the way of personal payments for rates, and consequently is judged in the light of “value received." The duties in-
viliving upon llu* incoming Mayor mu! Councillors nre <(iiit«.• ns onerous as oil any who have preceded them, and of this fad it i.s encumbent upon all electors to rolled. It is not our duty or our wish to imply in which direction electors should east their votes, for of the two Mayoral candidates both are citizens of Jong standing, and well and favourably known in the community, and I lie same may honestly
I«: said of the thirteen candidates lor Council honours, lull- what we di sire to impress upon electors is, first, of all, the importance of weighing the merits of (he various candidates according to knowledge ot their ability lor such position— i not according to personal prejudice —and t lion the necessity of resist - eririg their votes. It frequentiy happens lliaf a poll taken in rested of some municipal] matter, whether it he the election of it Councillor or the sanctioning of a loan proposal, re I loots a tepid interest, in local borough affairs. It is to he hoped, however, that electors will arouse ! hem, selves from alls condition of oeal political torpidity, and per- |
form wliaf is not only a personal duty devolving upon all who live or have interests within the local borough boundaries, but exercise a privilege which to some, we are aI'raid, is lightly valued, and not intelligently perceived, hut is theirs through flic mere fact of living under the generous laws of our coiintrv.
THE election of two members to the Foxton Harbour Board to represent the Borough of Eoxton is an additional duty of electors al tomorrow’s poll, and one that, may have far-reaching effect on our town. The present, is a very important. juncture in the history of the Board, and the extremely weighty problems concerning the development of the port .require that electors should give the most serious consideration to the selection of their representatives on this important body.
