MYSTERIOUS ACCIDENT.
CAR DROPS 130 FEET OVER EMBANKMENT. 04 RI. S E RIO l ’SLY INJU R ED—DRIVER MISSING. Oamaru, April 22. A motor ear driven by Phillip Hudson, son of Mr Arthur Hudson, of Dunedin, who was accompanied by a girl named Olive Rutherford, from Coversham (Dunedin), was precipitated over n 50ft. bank near Kurow. The girl is seriously injured, hut there is no sign of Hudson. SMASHED ON THE ROCKS BELOW. Oamaru, Last Night. No trace has yet been found of Phillip Hudson, whose car ran over the cliff on the road above Kurow early yesterday morning, heating with it a young girl named Olive Rutherford, aged 17, who was employed as a clerk by the Otago Farmers’ Union at Dunedin. Miss Rutherford lies in the Kurow Hospital in a serious condition with a. punctured wound in the head.
At 7 o’clock in the morning tlie car was seen by a passing motori yelist stopped on the road, and the occupants replied to a query that it was all right. Half an hour later another passerby saw car marks leading over tho bank, and, on investigating, found the ear badly smashed on (he rocks J3oft. below. The girl was lying on a ledge 20ft. higher up. The girl was operated on last night, and her condition is still very serious.
Hudson is a son of Mr Arthur Hudson, biscuit manufacturer, of Dunedin. It is said that he was driving to his brother’s station in the hack country, and his disappearance is most mysterious, as the river (lowed at least 40ft. from where the car was found.
STILL NO TRACE OF HUDSON. Oamaru, Last Night. Up till to night, no trace had been found of Phillip Hudson, who is supposed to have been one of the victims of the motor accident between Kurow and Oamaru on Wednesday morning. Large numbers of police and detectives are on the spot, and search parties have been scouring the district. The girl victim of the accident was operated upon this morning, but is still unconscious. She has a severe wound on the front of the head and numerous abrasions of the body, but there is just a chance of her r(eovery, though her condilion is critical. The main Waitaki river is about two hundred yards from the spot where the motor car was found, and it is thought: possible that Hudson has got into this. A good deal of mystery surrounds the case.
