LEVIN-MARTON RAILWAY LEAGUE.
ANNUAL MEETING. The annual general meeting of the above League was held in the Town Hull supper-room on 'Wednesday afternoon, presided over by the President (Mr .J. Chrystall). Also present were: Messrs AVinstalev and D. Christie (Foxton Chamber of Commerce), AY. Adams (Foxton Borough Council), Mat lieson and Holms (Levin Chamber of Commerce), Howe ami Keedwell (Levin Borough Council), and F. H. Hudson (Horowheiiua County Council). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs Linklater, M.P., [lon. Edward Newman, ,). Kebbell, A!. E. Perreau and Ryder (Horowlienua County Council). After briefly welcoming the delegates the Chairman moved a MOTION OF SYMPATHY 1 , the Premier in his illness, with an earnest wish for his speedy recovery. The report and balance-sheet disclosed a credit balance al the bank of £24 Us (id, and the secretary (Mr Holms) reported that he bad received several promises of
donations. RECOGNITION OF SERVICES. In moving the adoption of the balance-sheet, the Chairman said that he considered the secretary should be remunerated for bis indefatigable efforts on behalf of the League. He had spent many weeks in the preparation of data, and he had pleasure in moving that he be granted the sum of £24. He was mdy sorry they could not make the amount £SO. Mr Holms said he had undertaken the work as secretary without any thought of remuneration, and did not feel inclined to accept the
amount. Other members of the League made eulogistic reference (o Mr Holms’ work, and be finally decided to accept £2O. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The following officers were elected .—President, Air ■). Chrystall; vice-presidents, .Air Mathe.snn (Levin) and the Mayor of Mart on; delegates from boroughs, Marton (referred to Council); Levin, Ivcedwcll; Foxton, Mr Adams; Bulls and Rongotea Town Boards, to elect their representatives; County Council representatives: Cr. Hudson (Horowheiiua), AAA E. Barber ?Mrnawatu), and the Chairman of the Rangitikei County Council; Chambers of Commerce: Levin, Mr Rowe; Foxton, Mr AA’instanley. Mr Holms was elected secretary and treasurer, and accorded a hearty vote of thanks for past worlt. The executive’s recommendation re close examination of the , facts and figures submit ted'to the Royal Commission on the part of the Rail - way Board was endorsed. Considerable debate arose at this juncture, the meeting going into committee. The League expressed the opinion that the circuit!stances existing in connection with the objectives of the League warranted political action, and the matter is being referred to the constituent bodies for full considera lion.
The recommendation of the executive re issue of pamphlet setting forth fully the case for the link objective, for circulation to Parliament, local bodies, and Chambers of Commerce, etc., was endorsed. The scheme for the promoting of the £SOO fighting fund was reaffirmed. BUSINESS MEN’S TOUR. The Secretary reported that arrangements had been made for a business men’s tour of New Zealand, and that body of men had decided to leave the train at. Marton on May 28th and motor to Foxton and Levin, over the proposed LevinAtari on route. It was decided that luncheon he provided in Foxton, and that £4 be donated towards defraying expenses should same be required. A motion of thanks to R. AV. Holmes and Son (engineers) was moved for reduction made in them account to the League. A letter was read from the Hon. Newman, stating that he was satisfied that the link would eventually be constructed, and stating that the decision of the recent Commission was no surprise to him. He also expressed the opinion that it would not lie “long before tlyj question would again be forced before the notice of the Government, and assured the League of his support. Received. A letter was also read from the N.Z. Vigilance Committee, stating that a live interest was still being maintained in the Levin-Martou link, and that it was hoped to have a petition presented to Parliament to have the suggested Palmerston N. deviation blocked. —Received. A vote of thanks to the Chair concluded the meeting.
