BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. Tlte last monthly meeting of the sitting Conneil was held last night. Present: His Worship the Mayor (John Chrystall, Esq), and Crs. Bryant, Ross, Thompson, Parkin, Walker and "Adams. MOTION OF SYMPATHY. A motion of sympathy was passed to Mr Massey in his illness. In moving the motion, the Mayor referred to the Premier’s illness as a national calamity. REPORT AND BALANCE-SHEET The Town Clerk read a lengthy report on the activities of the Borough Council during the term of office of sitting members, which will be published in our next issue. The balance-sheet as passed by the Audit Office, was received, and it was decided that the Audit Office be asked to state its requirements as to the mode of construction of the gas works trading account. The above motion was in reference to a tag on the balance-sheet. The Town Clerk was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his interesting and comprehensive report of the Council’s work during the period of office. The estimates for the year 192526, as prepared by the Borough Treasurer, were adopted. ANZAC DAY. Decided that, the matter of An7,ac Day memorial service be left in the hands of the Mayor and the various ministers of religion to arrange. GENERAL. It was decided that the road foreman and roadman be instructed to turf over the cricket pitch, and to put in one day levelling track on Victoria Park, by request of' the Hockey Club.

Decided that the matter of rent to be charged to the ManawatuOroua. River Board for (he use of the Council Chamber be left in the hands of the Mayor and Town Clerk.

Decided to serve notice on owner of sections 22 and 23 in Spring Street, to erect suitable fence along road boundary of same. Decided that the Mayor and Cr. Adams attend the conference of (he Levin-Marton Railway League, to be held in Foxton on Wednesday. CORRE SPONDENCE

was read and dealt with as follows : A letter was received from Mr Me Knight, tendering his resignation as night soil contractor. —Decided to acedpt resignation, and that 5s additional horse feed allowance be granted until termination of services. From Fire Board, drawing the Council’s notice to the necessity of maintaining the street hydrants, and of unsatisfactory order of the indicators. —Referred to the Road Foreman. From same, stating that the shed on the McCarthy Estate, at. rear of the Family Hotel was a menace from a fire point of view, and asking that same be condemned and removed. —Referred to Health Inspector. From W. H. Climie and Son, in reference to sewer work in Union, Johnston and Frances Streets. Received. A letter was received from Mr R. L. Heath, of Purcell Street, for the installation of two gas cookers in his residence, as per terms of a motion passed at the last meeting of the Council.

Mr Heath was also present to support his request, and said that he was also prepared to instal a ealifont if the Council would lay a main down his street.

The Mayor said the matter had been fully considered by the Works Committee, and it was not considered a financial proposition at present. After some discussion it was decided that the gas manager go into the mattef and report to next meeting. WATER AND DRAINAGE REPORT. During the month the following works have been carried out by the water and drainage stall: —-Carting sewerage timber’ from Robinson Street to Union Street, meter reading, repairing water meters, and stock taking. The maintenance work in connection with the water and drainage lias been attended to and complaints and inquiries in connection with the Bylaws also. PUMPING STATION REPORT. During the month of March 875,000 gallons of water were pumped and 31 amperes of power used. Maintenance cost, Waterworks £l2 9s 4d, Drainage £3 15s Bd, general £4 5s Od, a total of £2O 10s Od.

ROAD FOREMAN’S REPORT. During the past month the following work has been engaged in b.y 0 the road staff: Tar sealing Russell Street, trimming the willows which obstructed view of ap proach to Whyte Street, cleaning drains Awahou, Johnston Street and Avenue Road, and general maintenance. The tar sealing of Russell Street has been continued to within eight chains _of the Park entrance but owing to the lower temperature and the tar we had being too thick for penetrating we have had to suspend operations for the present. Six trucks of Belmont metal have been ordered for the patching of the worst of the ruts in

various roads and this is now coming to hand. We shall need six hundred yards this season for the upkeep of the roads, especially in view of getting some of them in condition for tar sealing. The report was adopted, and it was decided to procure 400 yards of Belmont metal.
