RE-OPENING OF SCHOOLS.
RESUMPTION IN CERTAIN DISTRICTS. Cabinet on Saturday morning approved of the terms of a memorandum drawn up by the Health Department in respect to the reopening of the schools, which have been closed throughout the Dominion since the conclusion of the annual midsummer vacation at the beginning of February last. Those schools which are to be reopened will do so on Wednesday, April loth. The decision of the Cabinet was as follows: — (1) Schools to be re-opened as limited and recommended by the Health Department. Formal report from the Health Department to be prepared and sent immediately to the Education Department, then opening as so limited to be notified. (2) Attendance not to be compulsory until otherwise notified. This applies to secondary schools as well as to primary schools. (3) ' The position as to other schools will he considered later. The recommendations of the Minister of Health (Sir Maui Pomare), which were approved bv the Cabinet, were as follow: — North Auckland health district. —Secondary schools only to be opened. . • Central Auckland health district (comprising Auckland City and Greater Auckland, and the counties of Eden, Manukau and Franklin) —Ail schools to be opened. South Auckland health district —No schools to be opened. Coromandel-Opotiki health district—Secondary schools only to be opened. Wairarapa-East Cape health district (that portion being Wairarapa and Waipawa hospital district) — All schools to be opened. The remaining portion, comprising the Hawke's Bay, W'airoa, Cook, and Waiapu hospital districts —All schools to he closed. Taranaki - Horowheima health district —Secondary schools only to be opened. Central Wellington health district (comprising Wellington City and Greater Wellington, and the counties of llutt, Makara) —All schools to be opened. Emphasis is laid upon the fact that attendances at ail the schools which are being reopened, both primary and secondary, are entirely voluntary, until instructions to the
contrary are issued. It has also been decided that on and from Wednesday, April 15th, the travelling of children from island to island is to be allowed without restriction.
