’VARSITY BOAT RACE.
CAMBRIDGE WINNERS. London, March 28. The weather was dull and showery for the annual eiglit-oared boat race between crews representing Cambridge and Oxford Universities. The attendance of the public was enormous. The water was rough, especially on the Surrey side. Cambridge won the toss and chose Middlesex side. Oxford got into difficulties, as the boat was walerloged and it was impossible to propel it. When opposite Harrods it appeared to be sinking. It went deeper and deeper into Ihe water, being more than half full. When three hundred yards above Hammersmith Bridge the crew stopped and pulled to the bunk. The crew were taken back Ic Putney soaked to the skin and smothered in borrowed garments. A little later the boat was brought back by a police launch. Cambridge paddled past the post. The cnew completed the course in 21min. sUsee. Cambridge were strong favourites for the race as being the more experienced crew. Oxford have been unfortunate with a succession of illnesses.
