MANAWATU RABBIT BOARD.
•SPECIAL MEETING. The following is a continuation of business frnnsneled at the special meeting of Hie above Board after wc had gone to press on Thursday: Decided fo commence strychnine poisoning on the TOtli May on all proper!ies fo the soufh west of Tnikoren Road, and (o procure 80 bottles of strychnine poison. Decided lo draw flic attention of the Manawatu County Council to i lie alarming growth of gorse in ilie county and to ask Hint body io • a force the provisions of the Noxious Weeds Act, 1908. INSPECTOR’S REPORT.
During the past three weeks I have been engaged in the inspection of properties, more especially in regard to flic results of the general poisoning ordered by the Board. Oil all places inspected, with the exception of live, poisoning has been carried out although in a number of cases insufficient work lias been done. In (lie majority of cases successful lakes have been recorded. I conducted an experiment with Thier’s jam rabbit poison on a Motuiti property, with satisfactory results, considering the weather encountered, hut as a. jam poison I find it too expensive. On a Tnikorea property file same poison used on carrots wms very successful and as a carrot poison it will lie found to be very-'clieap in its use. I also poisoned several road lines in the Board area during the month and, with the exception of one road line poisoning results were quite satisfactory. A further supply of fumigators came to hand last week, but, owing to the non-arrival of the Government bi-sulphide, the work of fumigation is being held up. However, I have been successful in placing an order for a ton of bi-sul-phide in Dunedin, and this should be on hand in ten days’ time. A report lias been circulated round several parts of tins .lisirict, saving riant at a certain fumigation demonstration, results wore .not satisfactory, etc. I -visa to emphatically deny this report cs being absolutely lVise. It has been circulated by men who, tlirougi fear of having to spend money in rabbit destruction, want fumigation fo be thought a failure. I established depots for the distribution of poison in the district for the benefit and convenience of farmers, but owing to so many groundless complaints regarding poison supplied, I would not recommend anything further being done in this connection, and when n poisoning is ordered farmers can buy tlieir poison when and where they wish. It will be necessary at to-day’s meeting to fix the date for the coming carrot poisoning at the beginning of May, so that the Sta--1 utory notices can be sent out during tiie coming month. —Adopted. Accounts amounting to £4O 0/8 were passed for payment.
