RAILWAY FATALITY.
GUARD DIES FROM INJURIES. Elt ham. March 10. Last vwaing a serious tragedy oc~ curred nt ;1 shallow cutting on the now Opunake railway line, opened last week, when Frank Gorman, aged 50, a guard on the workers’ train was killed and four worker* were injured. The train was returning with the workers to the base sit llapuni, when a cow, without warning, jumped on to ihe line. Guard Gorman, as ivas his usual procedure, was standing up in sin open truck, with the workmen seated. He gave the warning signal, bnt the cow was then
~nly a- few feet oil' and the train could not be pulled up. The lirst six trucks were derailed and Gorman was thrown under one of the trucks. He was pinned under the wheels and when dug out succumbed to severe injuries. Other workmen were thrown out, but their injuries were not severe. W. H. Gieen was injured about the head, ■J. Martyn about the head and limbs, C. Long received injury to bis ankle, and P. Sexon injury to his ankle. The train was travelling at 17 or 18 miles per hour at the time of tlu impact. Most of the workmen jumped clear of the trucks, when 'they were derailed. Gorman was pinned on his back by an overturned truck, the wheel of which was ou l,i & abdomen. Martyn was removed to Hawera Hospital to-day. The eow had got into the railway reserve by getting through breakages in the hedge of a neighbouring farm. 1/0.
