TYRO DEFEATS CHAMPIONS. Auckland, Yesterday. Ai the swimming carnival last night, A. Baird, a local swimmer, sprang a surprse in the 500 metres 1 ace by beating Cunnold, the New' Zealand mile and a-balf champion, Envvright, holder of the Kellerman Cup, and Pelham, who created a new record for 440 yards at the recent. New Zealand championships. Baird swam the distance in 7 min. 14 3-5 sees., the best put up by a New Zealand swimmer, and beat Emvright by three yards. Miss Jean Bell, aged 10, made a new record in the intermediate girls’ race, 220 yards, doing the distance in 2min. 57 3-5 see.
