BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held last night. ROAD FOREMAN’S REPORT. During the month of February •he road staff has been engaged on the following works:—Tar sealing Johnston and Russell Sts., patching ruts Ladies’ Mile and Avenue Rd., grubbing noxious weeds Victoria Park; weeding water channels and footpath, Wharf St., and southern end of Main St. and general maintenance work. The new work in Johnston St. from Union St, to Avenue Rd. has been given a second dressing and should keep good for some time. Russell St. has also received a second dressing for.a distance of about 12 chains and we are continuing with the work as weather permits. We have obtained 21 barrels of tar from the Restar Works, Wanganui, to complete this work as far as the Park cutting. This tar, however, we find too thick for applying to the road surface, especially as the weather is now so much cooler. This tar needs to be heated to give it any chance of penetration and I would strongly recommend that the Council obtain a tar boiler for this purpose. There is every likelihood of our having to use a good deal of this class of tar in the future, and I therefore suggest that the tar boiler would be a good proposition.—Adopted, and decided to obtain prices for tar boiler. PUBLIC WORKS COMMITTEE REPORT. The Works Committee recommended that a flood gate be put in the Awahou Drain at its junction with Spring Street at the end of Norbiton. Cr. Thompson said that he was pleased to see something was being done in the matter of preventing the flooding of private property by this drain. It would, however, be unsuccessful. The report was adopted. WATER WORKS FOREMAN’S REPORT. During the month the following works have been undertaken: —Putting in 2inch water service at Messrs Ross, Rough; laying new gas service and repairing one; sorting out the drain material and attending to maintenance work in connection with water and drainage, and by-laws, etc. I would like to receive instructions .as to what to do with stray dogs running about Main Si. and causing a nuisance. The Pumping Station Report was as follows: During the month 725,000 gallons of water were pumped and 31 amperes used. The contractor has not yet returned to lix up the automatic cut out from the pump to the tower. Maintenance Cost: Water works .CIO 10/3, Drainage £2 4/3, General £4 5/-. Thirty-three hours were spent on outside work, producing £3 14/1. —Adopted. GENERAL. Permission was grauted the Foxton Ladies’ Hockey Club to use Victoria Park for hockey during the coming season. It was decided to call for applications for the position of examiner under the Motor Regulations. Decided to support the Levin Chamber of Commerce in protesting against Levin being cut out as a stopping place for the Napier and New Plymouth mail trains.
