Commendably brief is a story of Lord Darling, the witty judge. A lady sitting next to him at dinner said: “Please tell me how I should address you—Mr Justice Darling, or Lord Justice Darling?” “Just Darling will do,” was the amiable reply. A similar story turns on making “reindeer” not one word but two. Young lady to a Canadian oflicer next her at table: “Do you have reindeer in your country,” “No dear, it always snows.”
