The (tishorne Harbour Board has completed arrangements with the A.M.P. Society for the loan of a (pinner of a. million, a second instalment of the authorised threequarters of a million for harbour works. Tin* money will he paid at Gisborne as required. The interest is f>v per cent. Deer in South Otago in the Coolest on district have become such a post to settlers that unrestricted shooting has been resorted to, and no license is required by I hose in pursuit of them. A royalty of 2/per tail is being- paid to encourage their extermination. Tin* deer are particularly severe during the winter months on the turnips grown to tide the settlers over the cold period. During Ihe hearing of a rabbit case at Redding (relates the “Star”), defendant's counsel asked tin rabbit inspector whether he would he surprised to iearn that a member of the Rabbit Board had given defendant a very favourable report as to the condition of his property. The inspector: “No, I would not be-the least bit surprised about that.” Counsel for the RaJibil Board then asked the inspector what hi* really meant by this. The inspector: “Well, I am not surprised about (hat member of the Rabbit Board giving defendant a favouraide report, for that member is to be himself prosecuted under the Act next Court day.”
