Coley waited on Mr M. E. Perreau and presented him with a petition containing some 82 signatures, requesting that lie allow himself to he nominated .as a candidate for the Mayoralty. In presenting (he petition, Mr Chris lie said that as was already known they were losing the services of their present Mayor, a man who had occupied the position for the past nine years, and who had served them carefully and well. As i*.o Councillor was likely to come forward, the ratepayers were looking for a suitable man to occupy the position referred to. and their choice had fallen on Mr Perreau. He was a man who bad been in the town for the pad forty years and bad been personally known to tbe .-peaker for the past seven years. Air Perreau had bad an uphill tight and much trouble, yet he had won through and made good. They had watched liis associations with every society in the town, and such being the ease, they had decided to ask him to stand for the Mayoralty. The petition, lie considered to be a very Haltering one and contained the names of a. great .many busness men. The petition had been taken practically in Main Si. and could be quite easil- continued, but he was sure il was quite sufficient to make Mr Perreau decide to accede to the request of the ratepayers. Mr Winslanley endorsed the previous speaker’s remarks and said Mr Perreau was a, good and earn- , sl. worker and would be the right, man in the right, place.
Mr IVrreau, in reply, said that lie deeply appreciated (lie honour (liev had done him in selecting him li. he nominated for (lie Mayoralty. Ho was of opinion, however, that. 1 in-re. were others more, entitled to dial position Limn himself and if he consented to stand at such an early date lie might be blocking someone more entitled to stand than himself from coining forward. He would give the mailer his earnest consideration and reply per medium of the Press within a day or two. Mr Park.es said that no one was more wanted to fill the position than Mi Perreau.
