BOOKMAKER FINED £250.
Invercargill, Last Night. As a sequel to a police raid several days ago, William Sawers appeared at the Magistrate’s Court to-day charged with using his house a:-, a common gaming house and also with carrying on the business of a bookmaker. He pleaded guilty. Detective Carroll said that-since his previous conviction 15 months ago, ihe accused had apparently done nothing else. On the day of tlie raid, Dunedin Cup day, betting papers were seized of 404 transactions, including 61 doubles entered, the receipts being £539 10/-. Another detective took the phone and recorded a further £SO. Detective Carroll asked for the maximum fine, as there were others behind the accused. For the accused, Mr Russell staled that the police seemed to he making a scapegoat of him, as it was common knowledge others were engaged. His client was willing to give up hookmaking for good. The Magistrate, Mr Cruiekskank, said those backing the accused would escape if he was given imprisonment while a fine would reach them, and he imposed a fine of £250.
