THE MAYORALTY.
CR. SMITH URGED TO STAND. The Mayor (Air J. Chrvstall) is Mol seeking re-election to the Mayoralty and several names are being mentioned us likely candidates. We agree with the Mayor that such a position should lie tilled by a Councillor or that tlie Council should have the right to appoint its own chairman. The Municipal Corporations Act, howl'd*, does not make provision for the latter. Cr. Smith has been approached by ;i number of ratepayers and citizens 'to offer his services for ihe position hut up to the present has not given A definite answer. ITis services in .connection with other local institutions merits his election and we feel
confident, that if persuaded to stand lie would receive the confidence and support of a large majority of the burgesses. Tl is true lie is a busy business man, and such a position means a personal sacrifice, but it is a business head that is required at tin present time for the position, hacked by a thorough knowledge of the Council's ndminislrative affairs. We echo the general feeling, of townspeople that he will consent to offer his services for. the Mayoralty.
