BOROUGH COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly Hireling of tin* Borough Council w as held lasi night. ROAD FOREMAN’S REPORT. During the pas! month the following work lias been done by Die road staff:—Completing the asphalting of Park St. footpath, repairing broken surface of centra! portion of Main St. with tar and Belmont chips; tur scaling Johnston St. from Union Si. to Cook SI. and from Coley St. to Avenue Road: (rimming in loose metal on various roads pa I idling with metal and clinker on Sandnn Road and Union SI. and doing general maintenance. The work of tar sealing Russell St. has got just beyond Thyitne St. It would he a good thing if we were able 1.0 continue' this road right up to the Park cutting, but there is only 20 barrels of tar in hand and it will be needed to give the work already done another coaling at an early date to ensure it being of lasting benefit. The weather being hot during the month, we have been tar sealing. Very little 'difficulty has been experienced in putting on the tar from Wellington. This is very thick tar, but inferior to our own for road work, being lacking in essentia] oils with the result that the metal mixed with it does not make good asphalt, but is very dry and brittle in a short time, and easily broken up. Tar from the vertical retorts was therefore used for the first coat and topdressed with local tar. Owing to pressure of work, Main S. has sometimes been left tmswept on Wednesday, but attention is being given to it as often as possible and on Saturday, in addition to sweeping, the channels will be flushed with disinfectant. —Adopted. WATER AND DRAINAGE REPORT • During the month the following works have been carried out. —Two householders were connected with (he high pressure water supply and a new sewerage drain laid into the fire station. Thirty four hours were spent on outside work, producing £4.19/2.- —Adopted. COR RESPONDENCE was read and dealt with as follows: From the Chairman of the No. 9 Main Highways District, as follows: “In reply to yfmr memorandum of the 13th inst., yon appear to be placing construction and maintenance under the one heading. The Main Highways Board do not subsidise road const faction in boroughs. If you refer to my memorandum of 13th ult., clause 23 therein quoted states the position exactly. The maintenance on adjoining Alain Highways in Manawatu countv is £94 per mile, taken from this year’s estimates. With regard to hack payment, no maintenance claim goes farther hack than the 9th June, 1924 (the date that highways were gazetted)." i From same re boundary roads between boroughs and counties, as follows: — "In reply to yours, re above, the road in question being under the control of the borough, 1 take it, is not a main highway. The Foxton Borough has, 1 presume, in the past received a small subsidy from the County towards the cost of maintenance of this road, and the Alain Highways Act has no eil'eet on the mailer. The proper course for the Borough appears to be to ask the County to continue its contribution towards the cost of upkeep. I should be glad to receive a plan showing these boundary roads round the Foxton Borough, us in your memorandum, of 13th inst., you mention two miles us the distance in your Borough, but we cannot make that distance from, gazetted boundaries.” Decided that a sketch plan of the boundary roads be forwarded to the No. 9 Highways District Council, and that the Mayor’s offer to interview the Chairman of the Board be accepted. From the United Sports Association asking the Council to give the men in camp next week free pass to Cabaret evening on Wednesday as the Sports had been postponed. —Request granted. From H. WI. Climie and Son. forwarding information in reference to water tower. —Decided to interview Air Climie on the mater referred to. GENERAL. That action of the Mayor and the Town Clerk in accepting the offer of the Drainpipe Co., Wellington, lor glazed earthenware pipes was endorsed and an order placed for £l5O worth of pipes, first delivery on Ist March, 1925, payment to be made after 31st Aiarch, 1925, or as soon as the money comes to hand. Decided to grant Mr Downes two weeks leave of absence, Air Carey to take charge of the gas works during his absence.
