AVERAGES 33 MILES AN HOUR. The new self-propelled steam car ni-ently landed by the Railway Department for service on the Unit line has made extensive trials up the bne ,-is far as Palmerston N. The actual running from between Paekakariki ami Palmerston N. was 4 hour -!;■> minutes —an average speed of 33 miles per hour. On down gradients exceeding 1 iti 100 a speed of •In miles per hour was attained, but i lie maximum on the level was 35 miles per hour. It is rumoured that there is a possibility of one of these ears being pul on the Palmerston N.-Foxton section for passenger service at a later dale.
