THE HEMP MARKET.

JANUARY GRADING RETURNS. The grading returns for hemp, tow, stripper tow and stripper slips have been issued by the Department of Agriculture for the month of January, as follows: — The detailed particulars of the hemp graded is': —

Pt.. Chalmers 95 Twenty-three bales at Pieton were graded fine. One hundred bales at Romahapa, 132 at Auckland, and 66 at Foxton were rejected and one bale at Auckland and two at Wellington condemned. The following shows the number of bales in each grade, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis: Pine 23 (48), good fair 1,003 (1,122), high 'fair 4,257 (3,471), low fair 2,423 (679), common 391 (99), rejected 298 (132), condemned 3 (nil), a total of 8,398, an increase of 2,847 bales on last year’s figures. The number of hales graded at each port w^ere: — Romahapa 118, Auckland 1,832, Poxton 2,099, Wellington 2,488 Blenheim, 219, Pieton 57, Lyttelton 73, Bluff 824, Dunedin 173, Wairoa 420, Pt. Chalmers 95. The detailed particulars of the tow graded was as follows: —

Twenty-four bales at Auckland 14 at Foxton, 20 at Wellington, and 15 at Bluff were condemned. The following shows the number of bales in each grade, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis. — Ist grade 280 (517), 2nd grade 1,497 (765), 3rd grade 341 (212), condemned 73 (24), a total of 2,191 hales, being an increase of 673 bales. The number of bales graded at each port was: — Auckland 437, Poxton 364, Wellington 651, Blenheim 56, Pieton 22, Lyttelton 98, Bluff 368, Dunedin 18, Wairoa 106, Pt. Chalmers 71. Stripper tow. —Ninety bales at Wellington were graded 2nd grade, 18 bales 3rd grade, and 36 bales condemned. Thirty-six bales at Foxton were graded 2nd grade and 20,bales. 3rd grade. The total number of bales graded for the month was 200 as against 296 last year. Stripper Slips—Five bales at Lyttelton and eight at Auckland were graded Ist grade, 42 at 1? oxton, 82 at Bluff, 18 at Wellington and 11 at Auckland were graded 2nd grade and 13 at Bluff and 11 at Blenheim were condemned, making the total number graded for the month 190 as against six last year.
