ATHLETICS.
(By “Has-Been.”) The highly successful St. Patrick’s Club, Taihape, have their programme out for the coining meeting on St. Patrick’s Day. This progressive body have further increased their prize money. The Sheffield carries £llO prize money: one mile £35, and half mile £2O. ft * * The racecourse has been well patronised by runners during the last fortnight. The Wednesday evening handicaps have drawn good fields. * ft * Runners- should note that nominations for running events at Foxton meeting close with the Secretary on Monday, iltli inst., at 8 p.m. A pleasing feature lias been the enthusiasm and form shown by the local junior runners, Rankin, H. Parker and Coley. These lads would be well advised to confine themselves to shorter distances in their training, however. To run a mile almost every night is overdoing it. Williams has contented himself mostly with long spins, no doubt with an idea of improving his wind.
Cunningham and Ball have made spasmodic appearances on the track. Both are good performers, and would be still better with stricter attention to training. The same applies to J. Huff. * ’ * e R. Parker promises to perform well in the Maiden Race at Foxton. * • * Reid is mixing his work and seems to he in good staying form. * * » Kirkland is a hard worker at all times, and is never beaten until the tape is reached. He should be in the money at Foxton. * ft * Coming meetings: Foxton. February 18th, Dannevirke, March 11th., Marton, March 14th; Taihape, March 17th and 18th.
