ST. PAUL’S CATHEDRAL.

EMPIRE-WIDE APPEAL FOR FUNDS. London, January 24. With a view to making the St. Paul’s Cathedral preservation fund an Empire matter, the “Times” has requested the co-operation of the Australian Press Association in making an appeal for subscriptions which it has inaugurated. The response in Britain has already been remarkable, over 12,000 individuals having subscribed £105,000. The fund is still mounting by several thousands daily. The first cheque for £IOO.OOO was handed over to the Dean and Chapter on Friday. Sir William Dunn, the architect writing in the Royal Institute of Architects’ Journal, in the controversy relating to St. Paul’s says: — “Too much deference is being paid to Wren and all kinds of secondary causes are suggested and debated before it is admitted that Wren built the piers carrying the dome in a manner that present-day speculating builders would shrink from, yet such is the case.” Sir W. Dunn, who is an authority <m concrete, is of the opinion grouting and replacing the stones is inadequate and both a waste of money and a serious danger. The piers must be rebuilt with proper material capable of carrying the load.
