GLORIA SWANSON IN “A SOCIETY SCANDAL.” “A Society Scandal” is the most sensational story of modern society that the screen lias seen. Gorgeous gowns, and dramatic scenes with Gloria Swanson as the woman who swears revenge on the man who has torn her name to shreds in the divorce court. In this Paramount, picture which the Town Hall will have the pleasure of presenting at the Cabaret to-morrow evening, Miss Swanson is supported by Rod la Rocque, and Ricardo Cortez. “A Perfect 36,” comedy and other pictures are on the bill. Usual Cabaret prices. On Thursday evening a genuine novelty is offered, to Town Hall patrons when “The Vengeance of the Deep.” a drama enacted on the ocean’s bed will be screened. The story tells in romantic fashion of the adventures of a girl forced to live among the pearl fishers of the South Seas. Several thrilling undersea encounters between divers and tiger sharks are witnessed. A comedy “Please Arrest Me,” and the latest English News are also on this good programine. PERRY BROS. CIRCUS AND ZOO. There are treats in store for Foxton people on Monday, January 26th., when Perry Bros, big circus opens for one night only. For the young a circus never loses its glamour, but for the old, who grow discriminating with the years, much depends on the quality of the performance. If a. circus is exceptionally good they enjoy it, but it must be above the, average. Perry’s Circus includes artists from America, Africa, and Australia, and comprises 40 performfcrs in addition to tlm animals. Included in the list of artists are the five Perry’.*—springboard flyers and acrobats, thrilling tent-top firing trapeze act, Alberto, the wizard on the wire; Delevnnte sisters, whirling dental artists; the Ishmalian Arabs, tumblers of (lie Sahara; Lizzie Mackie, champion lady equistrienne; the Elmos, perch and ladder balancers and risley artists; La Belle Vera, in spectacular butterfly dance on horseback. Le Henri, the great horseman who throws backwards and forwards, somersaults from Hie ground to the back of galloping horses; La Belle Maisie, ceiling walker and trapeze artist; George Kay, in a six horse picture act; the Ivlentos, in a screamingly funny fall from the roof act; the three Dolly Vardens on the whirling whizz; Daphne and Dorrie Juvenille, contortionists; Master James, chair-balancer; George, Olio and Bobo, the three clowns who will keep the fun going. The principal horse act, will be Lone Star, the, champion pony high jumper. “Lone Star” has annexed the prizes year after year at. practically every important agricultural show in Australia and has 7ft. din. to his credit. Other horse acts include the football ponies, jazzing pony, boxing ponies and Jumbo the huge performing elephant. In addition there are lions, tigers, jaguars, chimps., racoons, wolves, goats, monkeys, and camels. The N.Z. Times, speaking of Perry Bros. Circus, says: “Those who enjoy a good circus will find what they are looking for at Perry Bros, bright show. —r " \ ROYAL PICTURES. The most picturesque and atmospheric of places, the New York Bowery of a generation ago, supplies the intriguing background for “The Bowery Bishop,” the pictcrisation of Alexander Irvine’s famous story that is to be screened at the Royal Theatre to-night. It is one of the most entertaining pictures of the season. . On Wednesday a beautiful modern romance drama, “Her Five-foot Highness,” featuring Edith Roberts will be screened. Also special Centuary comedy, “Our Pet,” will be shown. On Thursday night “Passions of the North.” a Selznick feature will be screened. It is a story with its location in the Northern parts of China and Tibet. The big part, enacted by a genuine Chinaman, is not the least interesting item in this intensely dramatic picture.
Oii Friday night “So Long Letty” will be screened. A story of how two men planned to divorce their wives and how the wives beat them. On Saturday night “Anna Christie” is to be screened.
