SHANNON BRIDGE.
HOROWHENUA COUNTY’S POSITION. HIGHWAYS BOARD -CONTROLLING AUTHORITY. At Saturday’s meeting of the Horowhemia County Council, the Engineer (Mr W. N. Anderson) reported as follows regarding the Shannon Bridge:— “The Public- Works Department completed ihe work of strengthening- the main span of this bridge. The pimi Ims been completed except tin- hand rail and is ready for I.miiching and the eastern approach at tin- puni site has been formed and metalled. This complete, t|,e work so far as the HoroHbcnua County started work on tin- approneh :,ri the Western'side of the river during ibis week.”
In moving the adoption ' of the icporl, the chairman tGr. G. A. Monkj said that the ijiiestion of the bridge was on*- which hud been widely discussed lately and some of the local bodies suggested lliat a conference should be called to go into the matter more fully. These bodies wished to know if the Horowliemia County would be represented and lie was of opinion that they should certainly be provided that the Main Highways Board was also represented, so that some finality could be reached. The Public Works Department had approached the local bodies who were not satisfied with what was being done, asking if they were willing to contribute to the repair of the bridge, but so far no decision had been arrived at. As far as the Horowlienua County Council was concerned it must be emphasised that they had no controlling power over the bridge. They had done all they could to restore traffic. The Engineer bad constructed approaches to the punt and lie was prepared to say that it the Mariawatu Countybad done their side, the punt would be in operation now. Cr. W byte said that the general impression was that the County was the controlling body in regard to this bridge. The chairman stated that this was a mistake. The Alain Highways Board bad superseded the County as (be controlling body. Regarding the conference which was suggested •be would like the authority of the Council to represent the County at such a conference, and would suggest (hat the members of the riding and himself be so appointed.—Agreed.
