ROADING THE SEASIDE SETTLEMENT.
A revaluation of the local seaside settlement has been made and as a result it is probable that the rates levied by the Manawatu County Council will he considerably increased. Tn the past the rates to the county have averaged about 1/6 per section. Now, we are informed, they will he raised to about 10/Owners of sections at the seaside, however, contribute 12/6 per year towards the loan raised some years ago for the road leading from the borough boundary to the river foreshore. The land upon which the settlement is situated at the seaside, is a Harbour Board endowment, and the occupants are lessees of the Board. The County Council is not responsible for any of the by-roads which are vitally essential to give access to the sections anil which should be properly formed and metalled. The point is this: If the County Council is to derive increased revenue from the seaside it should hear a fair proportion of the construction and maintenance of the roads. We do not desire to make comparison- hut it would appear that the County Council has- been more than generous to the Tangimoann seaside settlement and we ;,sk that ttie same consideration be given to the local seaside. In any case tlie question of reading 1 at the local seaside is a matter which should l>e immediately attended to by the Harbour Board and possibly smic equitable arrangement could he arrived at between the. two bodies concerned.
