DESTRUCTIVE FIRE.

DESTROYS TOW-TEASING PLANT. ALSO MIL BREWER’S ROPEMAKING PLANT. A tire which started in the tow dust at Messrs Ross, Rough and Co.’s tow-leasing shed yesterday afternoon, shortly before 3 o’clock, quickly spread among the inflammable material and, despite the efforts of the employees, destroyed the building and contents. The ilamc> spread with rapidity to Mr T. Brewer’s rope works which adjoins and which were also demolished. The site of the conflagration is outside tiie fire area, but on the volume of smoke being seen, the fire alarm was sounded and the brigade turned out, but owing to the fire plug being some distance from the conflagration necessitated the connecting up of all the hose available, but owing to lack of pressure could not gel a good volume of water. They however, succeeded in saving the main mill. A bucket brigade was also formed by. the mill employees. Fortunately the wind was blowing away from the other buildings. Both buildings destroyed were insured in the Atlas Company, Messrs Ross, Rough and Co.’s for £l,150 and Mr Brewer’s for £2OO.

Messrs Ross, Rough and Co.’s loss will run into between £7OO and £BOO.
