LIFTING FLOUR EMBARGO.
Wellington, .January 10 The Hon. IV. Downie Stewart, Minister of Customs, states: “My attention has been drawn to a statement in the press with reference to the removal of the embargo on the importation of Australian (lour on March 1 next. The article suggests that large importations of flour may take place during March, without being liable lo dumping duty owing to the terms of notice given last month by the Customs Department. The supposition is not well founded because, as a matter of fact, while in accordance with the “Gazette” notice of July, 1922, the Customs Department makes a practice of giving three months’ notice of its intention to levy dumping duties on importations of any article in normal quantities it is also therein provided that dumping dudes may be immediately imposed, without notice on any article, if it is imported in unusually large quantities. Therefore if as suggested, any merchants contemplate placing orders for large quantities of flour to be landed in New Zealand during the first few , weeks of March, they run the risk of being liable to pay dumping duly, if the evidence shows that dumping as defined in the Customs Act, is taking pi ace.”
