BOROUGH COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The/ ordinary monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held last evening. , WATERWORKS REPORT. During the month, the following works have been carried out. —Connecting two householders with the high pressure water supply, extending water service to the Racecourse, meter reading and general maintenance work. Pumping Station: — Maintenance cost: Coal, 2 tons, £5 15/-, oil, 2 gallons, 9/-, wages £7 17/3. a total of £l4 1/3. Seventyfour hours were spent pumping water, producing 800,000 gallons, at a cost of 4Jd per 1,000 gallons. Maintenance cost waterworks, £3 11/3; do., drainage, £1 0/-; do., general, £3 3/9. One hundred and seventeen hours were spent on outside work, producing £l3 4/-..—Adopted. GAS MANAGER’S REPORT. The apparatus is in fairly good order and is working satisfactorily. The stoker, Mr Carey, unfortunately strained the ligaments of his neck while ,stoking oil December 28th and has not been able to follow his employment since. Mr Leaver has carried on as stoker. Mr Carey is making good progress towards recovery but will not be able to do any work for three or four weeks. During the month two cookers have been installed and two new services added. The gasworks house is badly in need of painting and I would request permission to obtain paint to paint same.—Adopted. ROAD FOREMAN’S REPORT. During the month the following works have been carried out by the road staff :—Mixing asphalt and laying same in Park St., mowing glass at the Cemetery, weeding water channels and footpaths in Main, Clyde, Whyte and Wharf Sts., patching sgts Park and Duncan Sts., and Lady’s Mile; screening Belmont chips in Council yard; mfowing Triangle and general maintenance. The grass in Victoria Park has also been cut and cleaned up. The top dressi ing of Park St. footpath has now been completed and after repairing broken surface of central part of Main St., the tar sealing of Johnson St. will be gone on with. —Adopted. FINANCE COMMITTEE’S REPORT. The finance ■eommfittee recommended that final notice be served on property owners not yet connected with the drainage system that proceedings will be taken against them. —Adopted. GENERAL. The Town Clerk read a very interesting paper on the rating of farm lands in the borough, this being based on the Act recently passed in regard to Rangiora borough. congratulate the Town Clerk on his comprehensive statement re a system of more equitable rateing and refers the matter to the new Council for favourable consideration in the direction of promoting legislation similar to that obtaining in the borough of Rangiora. Decided that in approving the proposed regulations re motor loi ries. the Council desires to impress on the Department the necessity of including a Clause making it mandatory on the drivers of lorries to keep to the left of the roadway to leave sufficient room for lighter and quicker traffic to pass. Decided to write to the Silver Band and inform! them that in future they must not practice on Council meeting nights. An auctioneer’s license was gran- J ted G. T. Woodroofe. Decided that in future borough reserves be not let to circuses or travelling shows, an amendment by Cr. Adams to the effect that they he allowed the use of the ground at £lO per night with a deposit of £lO for damage, being lost. - A letter from W. H. Climie and Son, forwarding report re sewer extension in Frances and Johnston Sts. was held over until next meeting.
