FOXTON NOT SIDE-STEPPED

Some little while ago fears were entertained that Foxton might be side-stepped by the Main Highways Board, it being feared that the Levin-Foxton road would not be declared a main highway. This was done however, and at last night’s Borough Council meeting the ‘ following letter was read from the Public Works Department: “Wellington-Auckland via Taranaki Main Highway —In reply to your letter of the 12th ult., I have to state that I have been authorised to assist towards the maintenance of die portion of the Wellington to Auckland road via Taranaki, passing through all main highways under section 23 of the Main Highways Act. The section of. road in question is shown on the attached lit ho. You will understand the conditions etc., from the following copy of Section 23 of the Main Highways Act. 1922: —‘In respect of the maintenance and repair of any street, not being a main highway or portion of a main highway, but being a continuation of a main highway, the Board may, on the application of the Borough Council, pay to that Council an amount computed at a rate per mile of the length of such street, not exceeding the rate per mile paid by the Board in respect of the maintenance and repair of the adjoining main highway.’ I shall be glad to receive your Council’s maintenance proposal for this length of road at an early date.” After a full discussion the fol-‘ lowing motion was carried: “That the proposals for maintenance and repair of the continuation of the Weiliiiglon-Auckland (via Taranaki) main highway throng i the borough tie as follows: Distance, approximately 2 miles—To tar seal the roadwav similar to Main St. throughout its entire length 16 feet wide on a properly constructed Belmont me- founciatl ».c at an estimated <• I,: .1’ £I,OOO p*r mile, the work tc be completed Mar Hi. 192 s -r condition that the work is subsidised by the Main Highways Board at the rate of £1 for £1 on portions of the work completed each year, u similar subsidy to be payable on the ordinary repair work necessary on the portion uncompleted, such repair work, however, not to exceed the rate of £l2O per mile per annum. That the sums expended during the years 1923-24 be also submitted to the Board with a request that the subsidy be granted on such sums.”
