DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.

PUBLIC INDIGNATION AIEETING SUGGESTED. The delay on the part-of the Education authorities to establish a District High School at Foxton, was the theme of an animated discussion at last night’s meeting of the Chamber of Commerce. Mr .Winstanley wanted to know why the request for the establishment of a District High School was being held up. It was, he said, manifestly unfair that Foxton parents should be compelled to send their children to Palmerston N. when they had a right to a District High School locally... Air J. K. Hornblow, chairman of the School Committee, said all the steps possible had beqn taken so far as the committee and Board were concerned to have the school established. He, in eonipany with Air. Linklater, ALP., bad waited upon, the Afinister and discussed the subject and the Afinister had promised to meet the committee when he visited the district. The matter, however, was in the hands of the Education Department. He, in conjunction with, the secretary of the committee, had interviewed the Board secretary on the subject, and it appeared that the Chief Inspector, to whom, the Department looked for advice, was not favourable to the establishment of a District High School on the grounds that the Palmerston N. High School afforded better facilities. This, point, however, did not meet with the approval of local parents, many of whom could not afford the expense of boarding.their children and the train juorney each day was-a source of worry to them. His recommendation was that the Chief Inspector should meet the parents and committee .and hear their, views. There, was no valid reason why Foxton shouldpe, deprived of secondary education. They had up-' wards of 30 children andi. accommodation could be found for the pupils iii the old school residence. Air Chrystall (Mayor) said he was surprised at. the delay and a public indignation meeting should be called. The matter was one of urgency and the school should be established immediately. The following motion was carried unanimously: -“That owing to the urgency of the matter, the Chamber requests the Foxton School Committee to write to the chief inspector to come to Foxton at the earliest possible moment to- discuss this question.” -v.M
